Welcome to the
Mathematics Department!
Mathematics is a core subject in both Key Stages 3 and 4. The department consists of eight full time teachers.
The department is well resourced and will occupy a suite of classrooms within the new building from September 2010. Every classroom will have an interactive whiteboard.
The Mathematics team are striving towards including functionality in lessons so that students see how Mathematics is used and applied within life.
Key Stage 3
In Years 7, 8 and 9 the year group is split into two bands. Within each band there are four sets which are based on ability and achievement.
The Department uses a range of resources, embraces new technology and encourages the use of online homework. Students receive three hours teaching time each week. Formal assessment takes place at regular intervals and movement between sets is frequent. Presently in the summer term of Year 9, students take Module 1(Data Handling) of their GCSE.
Key Stage 4
In Year 10 (2010-2011) Mathematics will be taught in two bands, with each band being set on ability. Year 11 (2010 – 2011) are taught in eight vertical sets.
All students follow the Edexcel Modular GCSE course at one of the two tiers, Foundation or Higher. Students receive four hours teaching per week within Key Stage 4. Edexcel GCSE Statistics is available for students who complete their GCSE Mathematics in November of Year 11.
Key Stage 5
In Year 12 students study two compulsory modules in Core 1and Core 2 (Pure Mathematics) and a third applied module which is selected from Statistics, Mechanics or Decision Mathematics. After successful completion of Year 12, students who progress to Year 13 then go on to complete two more compulsory modules in Core 3 and Core 4 (Pure Mathematics), and a third applied module which is selected from Statistics, Mechanics or Decision Mathematics. There is a second A Level available in Mathematics on the curriculum which is in Further Mathematics.
Other Activities
We support students’ learning by providing four extra lunch time sessions each week. This also allows students without internet access at home to complete their online homework within school.
The school enters students for the Junior and Intermediate Mathematics Challenges run by Leeds University, where they can achieve Bronze, Silver or Gold awards. Students have been highly successful in these difficult extra curricular challenges.
