Welcome to PE at St. Joseph’s Catholic College
PE is core subject in both Key Stages 3 and 4.
Department consists of 4 full time teachers and School Sports coordinator (SSC0)
St Joseph’s has a gymnasia, swimming pool, netball court, grass fields, fitness suite, dance studio and climbing wall and also uses local sporting facilities to enhance the delivery of the curriculum.
To raise standards of achievement in Physical Education for all students across the ability range and to provide a balanced curriculum of team and individual activities which allows each student to gain understanding of her own physical ability and to provide experiences which help to promote character and team work. By the end of Year 11, it is envisaged that each student will have had the opportunity to participate in a variety of opportunity with the intention of discovering at least one area of enjoyment which could be continued into life after education.
Key Stage 3
Students in Key Stage 3 take two hours of compulsory PE per week.
Students are set by ability midway through Year 7.
Students experience a variety of complex and demanding activities applying their knowledge and skills, techniques and effective performance in games, dance, gymnastics, swimming and athletics. All work promotes health and well being and emphasises the development of personal fitness.
Key Stage 4
Core PE
Students in Key Stage 4 take one hour of compulsory PE per week.
Students undertake a range of activities and follow an options pathway in Year 10 & 11.
GCSE
All students follow the Edexcel GCSE PE course.
The course has a weighing of 50% Practical and 50% Theoretical Aspect

Post -16
The A Level course expands on many of the ideas and concepts already encountered during Key Stage 4 courses based on the National Curriculum. It also provides a natural progression for candidates who have additionally studied GCSE Physical Education by extending their knowledge of skills, techniques and effective performance. It provides a transition for those intending to study related courses in Higher Education and for others who do not wish to go on to further study, it provides a balanced, broad-based course, worthwhile in its own right.
All students follow the AQA PE course.

Extra curricular activities
The PE department offers numerous extra curricular opportunities
Both at competitive and recreational level
Sports/Activities include:
Netball, Football, Swimming, Gymnastics, Dance, Basketball, Climbing, Rowing, Athletics, Fitness, Rounders, Athletics & Tennis.
